To decode the mythic messages in your life and story, refer to some of these more well-respected and popular
“dictionaries.” Keep in mind they define universal meanings of symbols; your personal meaning is the final guide for your interpretation. Starred (*) are the ones I refer to most.

*An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols by J.C. Cooper: This dictionary of symbols, from pre-historic to present day, spans time and cultures and is used professionally by Jungians.

*The Tarot Handbook: Practical Applications of Ancient Visual Symbols  by Angeles Arrien(Deck: Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot): This Tarot book (deck sold separately) provides insightful meanings for one of the oldest divination tools in history, based on archetypal patterns, by one of the most well-respected cultural anthropologists and educators in the field.

Eastern Body, Western Mind: Psychology and the Chakra Systems as a Path to the Self by Anodea Judith: This book explains Eastern theory (the chakra system) through the lens of Western psychology and walks the reader through the chakra system—its energy-center locations and emotional meanings in the body.

*Animal Speak: The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small by Ted Andrews: This “animal dictionary” provides ways to recognize and interpret the signs and omens of the natural world.

*Heal Your Body by Louise Hay: This quick-reference identifies the emotional causes and meanings of specific parts of the body, and their related diseases. Healing affirmations are also included.

*Permanent Healing by Daniel R. Condron: More expanded than Louise Hay’s book, the author interprets physical maladies emotionally and suggests attitudes and thoughts for changing them.

The Book of Runes by Ralph H. Blum: This package includes stones and a handbook for the use of an ancient oracle, the Viking Runes.

Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson: This kit includes animal cards and a handbook for interpreting them based on Native American teachings.

Awakening Intuition: Using Your Mind-Body Network for Insight and Healing by Mona Lisa Schultz, MD, PhD: This book divides the body into the right and left sides and assesses emotions to the seven power centers (chakras) in the body.
